Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of Calcutta High Court on Monday ordered the CBI to probe alleged malpractices in the selection of teachers for classes IX and X by the state education department.

The investigation agency has been asked to file its preliminary report in the court by March 15.

The judge said the CBI would have to find out the person or persons who had allegedly given appointments to the accused teachers who had allegedly secured the jobs without writing the state-level selection test.

Two petitions were moved before the court alleging at least 22 candidates were given appointment by the school service commission even though they had not taken.

The judge asked the CBI to find out whether the accused teachers were appointed against payment of money.

The same judge had earlier ordered separate CBI probes into the recruitment of Group C and Group D staff in secondary schools. Nearly 900 Group C and Group D staff had allegedly been recruited by the commission on the basis of invalid recommendation letters.

A division bench of the high court, however, has ordered a stay on both the earlier orders.

The lawyers appearing for the state and the commission on Monday hinted that they would move a higher bench to challenge Monday’s order.
