Salt Lake police arrested the 23-year-old woman and her friend Arijit Patra on charges of abetment to suicide based on a complaint lodged by the family members of Ronny Dutta.
Dutta, 26, who was found hanging inside one of the two rooms of the FE Block guesthouse where Dutta and the woman were staying on rent for the past several weeks.
Both Patra and the woman were produced before a Salt Lake court on Saturday that sent Patra to police custody till November 8 and the woman in a 14-day judicial remand.
In the court, the woman’s lawyers Mohammed Sajid and Mousumi Sarkar petitioned for bail.
Public prosecutor Mohammed Shabir Ali countered it stating that the two should not be granted bail as the police investigation into the case was still in its early stages.
“The police need to reconstruct the sequence of events as it is still not clear why and how a fight broke out. Moreover, Patra’s role is unclear in the incident,” said Ali.
Additional chief judicial magistrate Shantanu Ganguly denied the bail pleas.
Dutta was found dead inside the Salt Lake guesthouse on Thursday morning while the woman was found with multiple injuries and a fractured arm by a driver of her elder brother who brought Dutta down from the ceiling fan where he was hanging from a dupatta around his neck.
The driver later alerted the police.
A senior officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said that a fight had broken out between Dutta and the woman after Patra left late the previous night.
“Apparently, there was a scuffle between Dutta and the woman after the friend left. We are examining all possible angles,” said an officer of the Bidhannagar police.
A team of forensic officials visited the guesthouse on Friday to collect samples from the two-room apartment where Dutta and the woman had been staying for the last two months.
