A group of 20 youths allegedly barged into classrooms and assaulted some teachers at a school in Narendrapur on the southern fringes of the city, over the alleged rape of a Class VIII student.

According to an officer, a student was allegedly raped by a teacher in September. The incident was kept under wraps for sometime but it came to light in January.

“A case of alleged rape against the accused teacher was drawn up with the Narendrapur police station on January 10 on the basis of a complaint lodged by the girl’s family,” said an officer.

On Saturday, a section of the school’s teachers who were allegedly beaten up, called police for help after they were herded into a room and kept locked. A team from the nearby Narendrapur police station reached the school and rescued the teachers. By then the youths had left, police said.

“An FIR has been drawn up,” an officer said.

A section of the teachers told the police they believed that the school’s headmaster was behind the attack.

The teachers said they had raised objections against alleged irregularities by the school’s headmaster and lodged a complaint, which is being heard out in court. The attack was an attempt to threaten them.

The headmaster refuted the allegations. “We have been trying to curb attempts to create unrest in the school by a section of the staff. Why would we do anything to tarnish the school’s reputation?” he asked.
