Have you often marvelled at the simplistic treatment of a Ray film? Or how Fritz Lang created an urban dystopia in Metropolis (1927) to add another dimension to German expressionism?

To relive the wonders of these timeless classics, you can participate in ‘POINT OF VIEW – Reading Cinema as a Text (weekend summer film appreciation course)’, which will be organised by the Goethe Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan in collaboration with the Federation of Film Societies of India (FFSI- eastern region) in August and September.

The eight-day certificate course will be held from 3pm to 6pm on August 26 and 27 and September 2, 3, 9, 10, 16 and 17 at the Goethe Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan.

Students, teachers, film society activists and film enthusiasts in general will be able to enrol in the course. The participants will have to attend the sessions physically on the above dates. The maximum capacity is 25 persons, and registration will close as soon as the capacity is reached.

Participants in this course will be able to understand the history of cinema, its development as an art form and how cinema has become a powerful mode of communication.

Different components like time, space, genres, narratives, camera and editing would be included in the course. A special module will also discuss the rapidly changing scenario of films vis-a-vis the emergence of the new media.

Speaking about the course, Surjodoy Chatterjee, coordinator, South-Asian German Film Archive, said, “The course will offer an understanding and a knowledge-based analysis of world cinema. It’ll guide participants through the various aspects of filmmaking and give them a glimpse of the technology behind the scenes. Covering all formats of films, POINT OF VIEW will help film enthusiasts to appreciate cinema with the eyes of a connoisseur as well as a critic.”
