Quazi Sadeque Hossain, the self-proclaimed secretary general of an NGO whose purported members had marched into the Jadavpur University campus wearing army-like uniforms, was shifted from police remand to judicial custody by a court on Sunday.

Hossain’s defence lawyer during his court production on Sunday said that Hossain had just offered “voluntary service” by providing security inside the campus of the university free of cost, following the death of a first-year undergraduate student who was allegedly thrown off the second-floor balcony of the JU main hostel
building.

Hossain along with 25-30 men and women who were wearing Indian Army-like uniforms with the Indian Army insignia had gone to the JU campus and stationed themselves outside their university’s administrative building — Aurobindo Bhavan a few weeks ago.

Hossain had entered the building to hold a meeting with the officiating VC, offering free security service inside the campus.

The defence lawyer submitted a bail petition before the court seeking bail for Hossain on “any condition”.

The men and women in uniform had initially said they were from the Indian
Army and then said they were attached to the National Human Rights Commission.

The public prosecutor on Sunday submitted before the court that two fake Army identity cards and several fake Army uniforms with the Indian Army insignia were found in his possession.

The prosecution objected to the bail prayer and demanded judicial remand for the accused.

The court after hearing both sides sent Hossain to judicial remand till September 16.

Earlier the police had submitted before the court that they were suspecting that Hossain had brought the men and women inside the campus with the alleged intention to tamper with evidence related to the death of the 17-year-old student.

Police said they have found that the men and women who had gone to the Jadavpur University campus were from Champahati in South 24-Parganas and were apparently
not aware of the intention of their visit inside the university campus.
