An officer attached to the probe said a diary had been found in the apartment. It had a few words written in it saying no one was responsible for her death and that she was “depressed”.

The police suspect it to be a case of suicide.

“Sumana Pal, who lived on the 36th floor, was found in a pool of blood at the baseof the tower early on Thursday. She was taken to the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, where she was declared dead,” said an officer at Anandapur police station.

Her son was home with her on Thursday morning. Her daughter and husband were away.

The daughter, who is in her teens, stays in a different city, while her son, in his early 20s, works in a private firm, the police said.

“We spoke to the son. He said he was asleep whenhis mother fell,” said theofficer.

A police officer said the note they found in thediary was in a “shaky handwriting”.

Neighbours recalled Sumana as a “cheerful person”.

“She was very nice and jovial. I heard about the incident this morning. It is difficult to believe that she could do something like this,” said a neighbour.

The police said the body had been sent for post-mortem.

“We have not received any complaint from the family or relatives of the deceased till now (Thursday evening). An unnatural death case has been started at Anandapur police station,” said the officer.
