Elderly hurt in South Calcutta Law College students’ group clash

Person suffered blows to his face and chest, and had to be admitted to SSKM Hospital

An elderly passer-by who got caught in a street fight between two groups of students of South Calcutta Law College on Swinhoe Street in south Kolkata was allegedly hit by some students and had to be admitted to SSKM Hospital on Wednesday.

The elderly person suffered blows to his face and chest, said an official of the college.

Officers from Kasba police station went to the college to bring the situation under control. “We have not received any formal complaint yet,” a sub-inspector said late on Wednesday.

A meeting had been convened by the college authorities on Wednesday afternoon to resolve an ongoing dispute between two groups of students over the allegation of harassing a first-year student.

A college official said the dispute was resolved but clashes erupted between the groups after the meeting.

“The elderly person got caught in the clash. He has allegedly beaten up by some students. People from the area came help and he was taken to hospital,” said a college official.

When people of the area protested the assault, a war of words broke out between them the students.

A section of the residents allegedly smashed some college furniture, the police said.
