A 27-year-old man from Dum Dum in northeast Kolkata was arrested on Thursday for allegedly stealing an iPhone that another man had ordered on an e-commerce website. The accused got the phone delivered at a different address without the knowledge of the victim, a police officer said.
Kalyan Kundu was arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by the victim with the Cyber Crime police station in Salt Lake a few days back.
According to the complaint, the victim had ordered the phone on the e-commerce website and paid for it online.
On the date of delivery he received only an alert on his phone that the iPhone has been delivered .
The man then got in touch with the e-commerce website executives who informed him that his phone had been delivered and that the delivery address and mobile phone number registered with the site was changed hours after he had placed the order and made the payment.
"The man got in touch with us and lodged the complaint,” the officer said.
Sishir Kumar Naskar, the inspector-in-charge of the cyber crime police station in Salt Lake, said that Kundu had used two open source software that enable developers to perform specific requests on target web pages.
"The software enables users to try multiple user IDs and password combinations as credentials on different websites. After getting the access to the victim’s user ID and password, Kundu changed the delivery address and stole the iPhone,” said Naskar.
Although Kundu stays in Dum Dum, he had registered a New Town address to carry out the crime, Naskar said.
“We are trying to find out how he came across the customers’ database on various shopping websites,” another officer added.
A Salt Lake court sent Kundu to police remand.
