An app cab driver was arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated near Red Road in the heart of Kolkata around 10am on Wednesday, the police said.
The cab allegedly hit a police motorcycle that was trying to stop it. The cab was moving from Red Road towards Park Street without any passengers.
The cab first grazed past a vehicle on Red Road. A civic volunteer gave the cab a chase on his motorcycle and tried to stop it, but got hit by it.
The cab crashed into the sidewall off Outram Road after hitting the motorcycle.
The driver and the civic volunteer of the South Traffic Guard suffered injuries and were treated at SSKM Hospital.
The app cab driver has been identified as Sumit Yadav, 50. He is from Bihar, the police said.
He was booked under sections of drink driving, rash and negligent driving and mischief. A case has been initiated by the Maidan police station. The vehicle has been seized.
Kolkata police have re-launched its drive against drink driving across the city armed with breathalysers.
“We usually get cases of drink driving at night. It was a little unusual to get a case where a driver was found intoxicated at 10am. We have reported about him to the app cab operator,” said a senior officer in Lalbazar.
