A man and his woman friend who were allegedly clicking photographs inside a bar-cum-restaurant along EM Bypass and called the police when others at the bar asked them to stop, allegedly assaulted a police officer and tore the uniform of a woman cop who had gone to attend their complaint.
Police said the incident happened around 1am on Monday. The Lalbazar control room received a complaint from a couple prompting the police to send a team of officers, including a woman officer, to the spot.
“On reaching the bar, the cops found the couple who had alerted the police, standing at the gate. They complained of bad behaviour by some of the staff members. However, the couple refused to give their complaint in writing. As they were in an inebriated state, the officers asked them to go home and come to the police station the next morning to lodge a formal complaint,” said an officer of the Calcutta police.
However, instead of listening to the police, the couple allegedly started dropping names of several high-ranked government officials before the woman allegedly pushed one of the officers.
“When the woman officer tried to intervene, the accused woman pulled her by her hair and slapped her. A male officer intervened and tried to rescue the lady officer. Just then the man who was accompanying the woman pounced on the officer. He also grabbed our lady officer’s uniform and tore it,” said the officer.
The man also assaulted a home guard who was part of the team, police said.
An additional force was called to the spot and the couple was detained. The identity of the couple was later established as Saurabh Mallick, 26, a resident of Netaji Nagar and his friend Alenka Mallick, 23, who lives in Salt Lake.
On Tuesday, the male officer who was assaulted filed a written complaint based on which a case was started and the couple was formally arrested.
Officers of the police station where the case has been registered have collected CCTV footage from the cameras inside and outside the bar-cum-restaurant.
According to an officer, the man had introduced himself as a lawyer. The claim was yet to be verified, he said.
