Convicted for 2014 murder of 14-year-old boy in north Kolkata

After nine years, a fast-track court convicted Tara Chand of murder and sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for life

A man who was accused of killing a 14-year-old boy in a north Calcutta home on the Navami night in 2014 has been convicted of murder and awarded a life sentence.

According to the case diary, Tara Chand, who was 28 in 2014, had gone to visit his paramour at her home on Strand Road on the night of October 3.

“He was suspicious that she had a relationship with a 14-year-old boy. The boy was an orphan and stayed with the woman. Tara Chand in a fit of rage attacked the woman with a sickle that he found in the corner of the room,” said an officer.

The woman could wriggle out of his grasp and the sickle hit her leg. Before leaving, Tara Chand slashed Bijoy’s throat. The boy was declared dead at hospital.

The investigating officer of the case, Sandip Pramanik, arrested the accused a month later. The chargesheet was submitted in February 2015.
