An undergraduate student at Gurudas College had lodged an anonymous complaint against the general secretary of the students’ union at the college on the UGC’s anti-ragging helpline in June, said an official of the institution.

The student had alleged that the general secretary had threatened to teach him a lesson if he did not take part in political programmes of the Trinamul Congress Chhatra Parishad.

The UGC, in a communication to the college principal on June 8, had advised her to lodge an FIR with the local police station.

A college official said an FIR was lodged against the accused and his alleged accomplices with Phoolbagan police station on Monday (August 28).

When contacted, principal Mousumi Chatterjee said: “Unless the UGC instructs us to divulge the details of what we are doing, we cannot. We have already sent a report to the UGC.”

The general secretary of the students’ union, a third-year student, denied the charges. “I am not going to comment if someone makes baseless allegations,” he said.

An official of the college said the authorities were not aware of the identity of the complainant.

“The UGC has not disclosed his identity. All we have learnt from the complaint is that the student was threatened for staying away from political programmes conducted by the students’ union. Two former students allegedly beat him up. We have approached the police,” he said.

Phone calls from this newspaper to the officer in charge of Phoolbagan police station went unanswered.

Abhishek probe

Justice Amrita Sinha of the high court on Tuesday asked the ED to inform the court by September 14 about the progress of the investigation against Abhishek Banerjee, general secretary of Trinamul, in connection with alleged irregularities in school recruitments.

Following a submission by advocate Firdaus Shamim, who appeared for candidates who are said to have been denied jobs, Justice Sinha told the ED counsel: “The court had given you the liberty to interrogate him (Banerjee). What happened?”

The ED lawyer said Banerjee had been summoned once. He moved a case seeking quashing of the proceedings. “Till the judgment (in that case) is delivered, there is difficulty in calling him again,” the lawyer said.

The judge then asked: “What is the difficulty in continuing with the investigation because of the pendency of the judgment?”
