A Class X student of a city school fell to her death from a 20th floor apartment in a highrise building on CIT Road on Monday night.
Police said the girl fell through an open window in her room while her family members were in other rooms of the apartment.
“The girl was a Class X student of a city school. She went out cycling on Monday evening, returned home and went to her room. She was to have her dinner after that. When she did not come out of her room, the family members started looking for her in other rooms and then outside the house thinking she might have stepped out again,” said an officer of the eastern suburban division of the Kolkata police.
She was found in a pool of blood at the base of the 22-storey building.
She was taken to a private hospital where she was declared dead.
An officer said they did not find a suicide note and it was yet to be ascertained whether the girl jumped to her death or if it was an accidental fall.
“Her parents are inconsolable. We have not been able to talk to them. Her relatives claimed her body on Tuesday,” he said.
The officer said they had spoken to some friends and classmates of the girl and found that she was behaving normally on Monday and did not do anything that would make them suspect that anything was unusual.
“We have not found any medical history of the girl or anything suspicious,” he said.
The body underwent post-mortem on Tuesday. The police said there were multiple fractures and the cause of her death was “death due to fall from height.”
An unnatural death case has been started.
