A Class III student was hit by a taxi when he was crossing the road on his way to school in Haridevpur on Tuesday morning.
Police said the 10-year-old boy lives in a home for underprivileged children.
He and other children from the home, accompanied by their caretaker, were on their way to school around 11.05am when the accident happened.
“The child suddenly let go of the caretaker’s hand and ran into the road. A taxi hit him. He was taken to hospital in the same taxi,” said Prabir Kumar Das, an official of the home.
The boy was taken to a private hospital, from where he was shifted to SSKM Hospital.
“He underwent a CT scan. Doctors said he is stable but will be kept under observation,” Das said.
The road leading to the school has been dug up, he said.
“Our children go to a very small school because their parents cannot afford an expensive one. Cops are not deployed outside such small schools. Police are stationed only in front of bigger schools,” Das said.
The taxi that allegedly hit the child has been impounded, the police said.
The accident happened four days after a Class II student at Barisha Uchcha Balika Vidyamandir died in an accident while trying to walk across Diamond Harbour Road holding his father’s hand on his way to school.
An officer in the traffic department said guardians need to be more cautious while escorting their wards on roads.
“We cannot expect the children to know or obey all traffic rules. Guardians should ensure that they do,” the officer said.
