Calcutta University will conduct the second phase of counselling to fill the BTech seats that fall vacant after Jadavpur University conducts independent counselling from November 23 to fill its own 200-odd vacant BTech seats.
Vacancies are going to arise as JU will end up drawing some first-year BTech students away from its city rival, said a CU official.
CU on Thursday and Friday conducted the first phase of its independent counselling after 55 out of the 252 BTech seats remained vacant following centralised counselling by the JEE board.
A CU official said although the seats were filled up, many of the enrolled students would switch to JU once Jadavpur starts its four-day decentralised counselling from November 23.
CU will hold its second leg of counselling in the second week of December, the official said.
The counselling on CU’s technology campus in Salt Lake was held as seats remained vacant in streams like computer science and engineering, electronics and communication engineering, among others.
“We have received information that vacancies at JU have crossed 200 with enrolled students switching to the NITs and IITs. In order of state JEE ranks, students first prefer JU, CU comes next. So, when JU starts its own counselling, some students from CU will shift,” said a CU official.
Seats at CU fell vacant because many students switched to central academic institutes as well.
JU in early November uploaded a withdrawal form on its website for all students who had enrolled for its BTech course to find out how many of them would pull out.
The exercise will go on till November 20.
Rising vacancies at JU and CU, where the cost of studying is much less compared with other institutes, has left many teachers worried.
