The BSS School has switched to the Delhi-based ICSE board from the Bengal board.
The school, which got its affiliation letter on Tuesday from the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), will send out its first batch of ICSE (Class X) students in 2025.
“Parents in almost every parent-teacher meeting had been requesting us to change the board,” said Sunita Sen, principal of the school.
“Our admission was getting impacted. We were losing students to ISC and CBSE schools after Class X. They were not willing to continue in the state board. They want more subject options, which the Delhi board provides,” she said.
Marks, too, were a reason that prompted the parents’ requests. “On an average, CBSE and ICSE students score more,” she said.
The switching of boards was done under the leadership of Girish Kumar Khaitan, trustee and secretary of the school.
The school’s last Madhyamik batch will graduate in 2024.
The school had applied to the CISCE in January after getting a no-objection certificate from the state government.
The school was formerly known as Ballygunge Shiksha Sadan. In 1950, it started as a Hindi-medium school. In the early-1980s, the school switched completely to English medium.
The new name — The BSS School — came in 2014.
Recently, St Lawrence High School, another English-medium school, switched to the ICSE board.
In the past, South Point High School and Gokhale Memorial Girls’ School have moved to CBSE from the state board.
