There could be some clouds “in the first half of Sunday” but the sky will clear up in the afternoon. Monday will be clear.

Saturday’s maximum temperature, recorded in the afternoon, was a degree above normal. The maximum temperature on Friday was a degree below normal.

An official at the Alipore Met office said northwesterly winds, which bring cold winds to the city, were replaced by moisture-laden easterly winds.

“Easterly winds with a lot of moisture came from over the Bay of Bengal. These winds brought the clouds. The cold northwesterly winds were not present over Kolkata,” said G.K. Das, director of India Meteorological Department (IMD), Kolkata. “There is no threat of rain. The sky may remain overcast in the first half of Sunday but the sky will clear up from the second half.”

“On Christmas, the day temperature is likely to remain in the range of 25-26 degrees Celsius. We are expecting it to be a bright and sunny day,” Das said.

Saturday’s rise in temperature put many who went out wearing woollens in discomfort. “I had a meeting to attend in central Kolkata. I left wearing a jacket but had to take it off on the way,” a commuter said.

Those who were out said the cold wind was missing and the sun made it warm.

But the roads were filled with people. Shopping hubs like New Market and Esplanade were teeming. In the evening, Park Street was bustling.
