He was reported missing on Sunday evening. His family lodged a missing diary with Maidan police station.
Early on Monday, a member of the Eden ground staff spotted a body hanging from an iron structure in the upper tier of K Block. “A closer look revealed that it was Barik who was hanging from the structure. He was taken to hospital where he was declared dead,” said an officer of the Maidan police station.
The police said they received information about a man hanging inside the Eden Gardens around 7.30am on Monday.
A senior police officer at the Calcutta police headquarters in Lalbazar said they had not received any complaint till late on Monday. “Till now nothing has emerged that would suggest any foul play. This appears to be a case of suicide,” the officer said.
Eden has 17 gates. Block K, where Barik was found hanging, is closest to Gate number 14.
The police have spoken to the family of the deceased.
An unnatural death case has been started with Maidan police station. “Although it appears to be a case of suicide, the exact cause of death would be ascertained only after the post-mortem report is available to us,” said an officer.
