Raju Naskar, a real estate businessman and local Trinamul Congress leader wanted in connection with violence in Beleghata on April 30, was arrested from a hotel in Odisha on Sunday night.

Naskar and three others were produced before a court in Berhampur, Odisha, and brought to Kolkata on Monday on transit remand. They were produced in Sealdah court on Monday.

Beleghata residents had alleged that gunshots had been fired during the April 30 clash.

Police had found a 7mm pistol and bullet shells in Naskar’s office hours after they arrested 22 people following the clash between two alleged groups of Trinamul supporters in the central Kolkata area.

Naskar, whose office was ransacked during the clash, had been on the run since then, the police said. Based on a tip-off, cops traced him to a hotel in Gopalpur, Odisha, where a team of Kolkata police arrested him on Sunday.

The police said Naskar has also been tagged in a separate case related to illegal possession of a stockpile of arms.

Sources at the Beleghata police station said the April 30 firing was because of a rivalry between two Trinamul factions — one led by Naskar and the other by the councillor of Ward 34.

“I was not present when the trouble erupted. I heard about it later. The victim has apparently said Raju Naskar fired at him. Naskar used to walk in rallies for the party. I will not deny that,” said Ward 34 councillor Alokananda Das.

“We collect subscriptions from the party but Naskar is not even a subscriber. The law will take its course,” she said.
