Three men arrested for allegedly preventing police from entering Jadavpur University Main Hostel after a first-year student had died were granted bail on Wednesday.
Two of them, Manotosh Ghosh and Deepsekhar Dutta, who are students of the university and also accused in the murder case drawn up in connection with the death, will continue to be in judicial remand.
The third, Joydip Ghosh, a former student, will be released from jail on bail.
The three have been accused of preventing a team from Jadavpur police station from entering the hostel campus when the cops went there after receiving information about the fall of a student on the night of August 9.
The 17-year-old first-year student had allegedly been ragged and thrown from a second-floor balcony of the main hostel that night. He died at a hospital early next morning.
The three have also been accused of not allowing the police access to the injured student at the hospital.
“Had the police been allowed (to enter hostel), the boy could have been rescued on time,” chief public prosecutor Sourin Ghosal submitted before the additional chief judicial magistrate, Alipore, on Wednesday.
Ghosal said cops were not allowed access to the victim and hence, they could not record his statement before death.
Joydip Ghosh was arrested on August 24. He was charged with deterring public servants from performing duty and common intention.
Deepsekhar Dutta and Manotosh Ghosh, who were already in custody for their alleged connection with the murder case, were re-arrested in this case and taken into police remand last Saturday.
According to the legal procedure, the police would continue with the probe even after the accused get bail and will submit a chargesheet.
