Let the United States-India Education Foundation (USIEF) assist you. The Foundation has been aiding exchange of education and intellect between the two countries through scholarships, workshops, and more. With the Fulbright Scholarship applications open for the term 2024-25, here’s everything you need to know.

The U.S. Department of State and India’s Ministry of External Affairs funds several students with the Fulbright Fellowships to enable them to study, teach, pursue research at the US educational institutes. The applications for the scholarships are open every year in February.

Scholarships awarded

  • Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowships for students willing to pursue masters
  • Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships for students who have registered for a PhD under an Indian institution
  • Fulbright-Nehru Postdoctoral Research Fellowships for educational staff members who are in the beginning stages of their research.
  • Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowships for Indian faculty who are provided an opportunity to research or teach or pursue both simultaneously.
  • Fulbright-Nehru Visiting Chair Program at Emory University is provided to those faculty interested in teaching at the university in the field of Public Policy.
  • Fulbright-Nehru Visiting Chair at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is provided to those faculty interested in teaching at the university in the field of Public Policy.
  • Fulbright-Nehru International Education Administrators Seminar provides Indian educators to understand the US education system over a two-week visit in the October and November
  • Fulbright-Kalam Climate Fellowships are open to those who are registered for a PhD in subjects related to climate change like energy studies, earth sciences, agriculture and more
  • Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program is offered to those early stage and mid-career professionals who are interested in pursuing a non-graduate study related to vocational education.
  • Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program is offered to those candidates who are training to become language teachers. Selected candidates from India will be teaching Hindi or Urdu at designated educational institutes.
  • Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program for secondary school teachers to expand their knowledge on teaching methods and know about the US education system.
  • Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program for International Teachers brings almost 50 teachers from around the globe to the US for a semester program.
  • Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program offers teaching opportunities to scholars from various countries to teach at institutes which otherwise do not offer many visiting faculty positions.

Benefits

Candidates are given grants to sustain their stay and education in the USA, apart from the vast repertoire of knowledge which is exchanged at the educational level between candidates from across the globe.

How to Apply

  • Applications are required to be submitted online once the application window opens.
  • Each candidate is requested to have at least two to three referrals depending on the category of their grants.
  • In case you are an employed candidate, the application must be filled with the support of your employers and their referrals are mandatory.
  • USIEF requests all candidates while filling in the details to mention any preferred university. In case a candidate already has secured a letter from any of the institutes, it should be notified as well.
  • Candidates can apply for only one scholarship per year.
  • There are no age limitations.
  • If you have applied in the past but couldn’t get through, you may still continue to apply in the next calendar years.

Review process

  • The review process takes around two to three months post the submission deadline.
  • For Fulbright-Nehru Scholarships candidates may be required to appear for an interview in front of the USIEF National Selection committee.
