B.D.M. International held its annual sports meet at Gitanjali Stadium on December 19 and 20.
Principal Madhumita Sengupta welcomed everyone on Day I, touching on the nation’s Fit India initiative.
Around 30 events were lined up for the pupils, from the toddlers to Class V on Day I.
The first segment (comprising 10 events) was meant exclusively for the pre-primary kids.
The second segment (consisting of 20 events) meant for children till Class V, commenced with Abhyudyay — a dance performance by the senior secondary students.
The primary students captivated the audience with their striking drill performance. A whole lot of races followed.
The parents and teachers took part in some events too.
The second day saw students from Class VI to XII locking horns in various fun as well as competitive events.
The gala event was declared open with a relay of torch. There were myriad presentations of kinesthetic activities.
The four houses - Courage, Wisdom, Unity and Wisdom took part in a march past and house relay. There was also a tug of war between the alumni and the current Class XII, amidst lots of cheering.
The Wisdom House were the ultimate winners.
“More than 7,000 students took part in our annual sports, spread over two days. The students presented three drill displays that ensured that no child was left out. Everybody had lots of fun,” said the principal.
Army Public School, Barrackpore
Students of Army Public School, Barrackpore, took part in the 20th edition of annual sports on December 20.
The theme this year was Inclusion — A Step Towards A Better Future. The chief guest was Brig. R. Setlur, Commandant, BH, Barrackpore. Also present was footballer Ankit Mukherjee.
The even began with a welcome song and a torch relay. A parade by the four houses — Roy Chowdhury, Manekshaw, Cariappa and Raina — the student council members and NCC cadets followed.
Besides sporting events, there were also karate, calisthenics, pyramid formation, yoga and mass drill presentations. The theme of inclusion was highlighted in the school’s mixed relays as well as in an inter-school relay where the participants included AirForce School, Barrackpore Palta, Narayana School, Sodepore, Starling International School, Garulia, and others. The host school won the relay.
“Inclusiveness is all about creating a culture where everyone can give off their best. The theme of inclusion was in focus at our sports day where students of other schools too got to prove their mettle,” said principal Moitreyee Mukherjee.
Abhinav Bharati High School
The Primary section of Abhinav Bharati High School organised an inter-school fest, Manthan 2022, on November 24 and 25. Eighteen city schools took part in the event.
The theme of the event was Aye Mere Pyare Watan and it paid tribute to the nation’s 75 years of Independence. The fest had five events, both off-stage and on-stage, on each day.
The chief guest on Day I was Madhumita Puri, former principal of Techno India Group Public School, Bolpur. On Day II, it was Akanksha Bhaskar, state joint secretary, panchayat and rural development.
Puri spoke on the significance of being free while Bhaskar stressed the necessity of collaboration and co-operation in life.
The children took part in events such as Down the Memory Lane (childhood stories of freedom fighters), Halla Bol! (one-act play), Muktigatha (inspirational songs) and Wings of Freedom (group dance), among others.
All the events helped the young minds develop a sense of nationalism.
“This was the 20th edition of Manthan, so it was all the more special. The students and teachers were very enthusiastic about it. Usually, it is a single-day affair, but we had it over two days this year, with so many schools participating. Everybody had a lot of fun,” said principal Sraboni Samata.
Calcutta Public School, Bidhan Park
Students of Calcutta Public School, Bidhan Park, organised their annual exhibition, Nimble Fingers, after two years on December 19. It featured various science and art exhibits that were hand-made by the students.
The chief guest was Tathagata Das, secretary of the Calcutta Public School group.
More than 100 models on science, history, geography and social studies were on display. Besides, there were also handcrafted objects related to tribal India.
The event kicked off at 10.30am. The principal and teachers lit the inaugural lamp. The students presented their models to the principal and other guests, who made rounds of various sections.
The students also performed simple experiments to showcase their knowledge of chemistry that left the audience impressed.
From eruption of volcanoes to genie in the jar, every experiment grabbed a lot of eyeballs.
The halls were decorated with vibrant artwork.
“Students and teachers toiled hard to make the exhibition a success. It was a pleasure to see students demonstrate their skills with confidence. The models and experiments were on a range of topics and very well done,” said principal Protichi Lahiri Sengupta.
Bihani Academy
Students of Bihani Academy took part in their annual sports day with great enthusiasm on December 4. The chief guest was Sailesh Rajan, DIG, Indian Coast Guard.
The event began with a parade led by the school head boy and head girl. Finally, the oath-taking ceremony followed.
The day included karate and drill presentations and several track events. The middle and senior school also took part in many flat races and hurdles. Topaz house bagged the Best March Past award while Sapphire house clinched the championship trophy.
“It was exhilarating to have our sports day after two years. The day was memorable,” said principal Mousumi Mohapatra.
Methodist School, Dankuni
A show of the children, by the children and for the children — that’s what made the annual Christmas fiesta of Methodist School, Dankuni, stand out on December 8.
To make the students connect better with their school, after a hiatus of two years, the principal and teachers of Methodist School, Dankuni, decided to make their Christmas fiesta an all-student affair this year.
“Usually, we get guest artistes for this event every year. But this time, all performances were by the students. We wanted them to take more responsibility. Of course, the teachers guided them,” said principal Lawrence Emmanuel.
From make-up, choreography, anchoring to costumes, the students tried their hand at every aspect of organising a grand show.
The guest of honour was state transport minister Snehashis Chakraborty, while the chief guest was school chairman Anil Kumar John Servand.
A series of musical performances followed which saw active participation from students from all the classes. The welcome dance was performed by the students of Classes VI to XI.
The Pre-primary kids also presented a musical performance. The choir also sang an assortment of Bengali and Hindi songs.
A Nativity play was performed on the occasion. The last leg of the programme saw a fusion of various dance forms with contemporary English songs.
