Eight more parks for children will be built in New Town’s Action Area I, officials of New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) said.

The NKDA has decided to build parks, especially for children, by converting portions of the green corridor that skirts several blocks in the township.

According to a senior NKDA official, there was a longstanding demand from residents to have parks equipped with play furniture and where activity sessions for kids can be organised.

New Town has a number of parks, including some themed parks such as Sonar Kella Park in BA Block, Professor Shanku Park behind City Centre II and a park for senior citizens near the Sapno Bhor Elders’Home.

The decision to develop parks for children was taken after residents of several blocks approached the New Town authorities and expressed the need for such parks in their blocks so they do not have to travel long distances with their children.

Portions of the green corridor in several blocks in Action Area I, including DA, DB, AD, AC, AL and AK, have already been earmarked for parks.

“We will install children-friendly play furniture. These will be designed in such a way that they will be safe even for very young children,” said the official.

Each park will have posters and paintings of popular cartoon characters and comic book heroes such as Motu Patlu, Chhota Bheem, Iron Man and Spiderman.

NKDA also has plans to organise activity sessions for children where they will be introduced to a new game or a sport every weekend.
