60-year-old man dies of dengue in Thakurpukur

A 60-year-old man from Thakurpukur died of dengue at a private hospital in New Alipore on Monday evening.

A resident of Ward 125, Paresh Shaw was admitted to the private hospital on Friday with high fever. A dengue test returned positive.

His condition soon started deteriorating and he died on Monday, he said.

Shaw’s neighbours in Thakurpukur’s Banchorpara alleged that several drains in the area had been clogged for weeks, causing water to stagnate.

Water has also accumulated in several pits dug up recently to erect bamboo structures and for road repairs.

“We came together to collect money so that some of these pits could be filled,” said Avijit Das, a resident of the area.

Over 970 dengue cases were reported in the Calcutta municipal area in the past week, according to figures announced by mayor Firhad Hakim on Friday.

“The number of dengue infections (since January) stands at 4,779,” the mayor had said.

Hakim had on September 22 said 3,802 dengue infections had been reported in the city since January.
