A 24-year-old man from Purba Putiari on the city’s southern fringes died from dengue at a private hospital in Behala early on Saturday.

Family members said Sayan Ghosh Chowdhury had mild fever since Monday.

On Thursday, when the fever refused to subside, he was taken to MR Bangur Hospital and then to a private hospital in Behala where he was admitted.

Sanjay Ghosh Chowdhury, Sayan’s father, said: “We rushed to the hospital and spoke to the doctors. Around 9pm, he was given oxygen. After a few hours, they called again and said he needs to be shifted.... We were not prepared with enough money to shift him and told the officials. We returned home and after some time it was all over.”

On Saturday morning, a section of residents of Ward 118 in Purba Putiari stopped a team of health workers of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) from cleaning up the area.

Residents poured out on to the streets and asked the team members to leave saying that the clean up drive was a sham. Some of them alleged that the councillor had done little to ensure the spraying of larvicide and the cleaning of the area.

A delegation of residents later met Biswajit Mondal, the councillor.

Repeated calls to Mondal from The Telegraph went unanswered.

Sayan’s death comes a day after a 26-year-old from Dhakuria died from dengue. The woman was admitted to a private hospital on October 16 within hours of testing positive for dengue. She passed away early on Thursday.

In the last week, Kolkata registered 596 positive dengue cases compared to 606 the week before.
