Police have started a case of abetment to suicide against a youth in connection with the death of a 22-year-old nursing student who was found hanging on the terrace of the building where she shared a rented apartment with two other women.
Mallika Das, originally from Burdwan district, was studying BSc (nursing) at a private college in the city.
The police said a case of abetment to suicide has been started against a youth who was Mallika’s friend, based on a complaint lodged by her father Samir Das.
“A case under the IPC section on abetment to suicide has been started against Priyabrata Das, a resident of Taldangra in Bankura district, for creating mental pressure on her to commit suicide. An investigation has been started,” joint commissioner, crime, Calcutta police, Shankha Shubhra Chakrabarty, said on Monday.
The police said they would question the accused. No one was arrested till Monday evening.
Mallika was found hanging on the terrace of the building on September 25.
“She used to send messages to herself on WhatsApp. Around a fortnight ago, she wrote to herself that there were a few small pockets in her laptop bag where she had kept some money. She mentioned the names of some people to whom she wanted to return some money. The amounts mentioned were all small and it did not look like she was in any serious debt,” said an officer.
According to the statement of her roommates, she was last heard fighting with a friend over the phone the night before she was found dead.
The police had said Mallika’s roommates did not find her in the room when they woke up on September 25 morning. “On searching, she was found on the terrace, hanging,” an officer had said.
