More than 200kg of marijuana that was allegedly headed to the city was seized from Cooch Behar and a 32-year-old man was arrested late on Monday.

Sudhanshu Singh, director of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Kolkata zone, said a team had been sent to Cooch Behar’s Patchhara village.

“After we learnt that the information that we had received was correct, we raided one of the houses in the village. We found the marijuana stashed away in gunny sacks,” said Singh.

The estimated value of the seized contraband is more than Rs 20 lakh in the illegal drug market, another NCB officer said.

The NCB team arrested Achintya Pramanik, the owner of the house.

“During questioning, Pramanik told us that he was supposed to load the sacks on trucks that would head to Kolkata,” another NCB officer said.

Once the trucks neared Kolkata, the sacks would be distributed to receivers, who were supposed to hand them to street peddlers across the city, the officer said.
