An 18-year-old boy was arrested in the Maidan area for allegedly riding a motorcycle in a rash and negligent manner and hitting a pedestrian on Saturday evening.
Police said A. Singh, a resident of Strand Road, was riding through Red Road around 8.40pm when he hit a pedestrian near the Mohammedan Sporting football ground on Saturday evening.
The pedestrian, who the police identified as Ram Nath Shaw, 45, a resident of Janbazar Road, was admitted to SSKM Hospital
“The motorcycle hit the pedestrian at a high speed and he was flung off. The man landed on the ground a few metres away. He suffered multiple injuries and was admitted to SSKM Hospital,” said an officer of the traffic department of Kolkata police.
Singh, too, was taken to SSKM Hospital. He was discharged after treatment.
He has been booked under the Indian Penal Code sections dealing with rash and negligent driving.
Last week, a speeding Mercedes Benz had hit a scooter in the Maidan area, killing a 19-year-old youth who was driving the two-wheeler and leaving two pillion riders injured.
The two men who were in the Mercedes Benz have been arrested under Section 304 (part II) of the IPC, which deals with the offence of culpable homicide not amounting to murder (with the knowledge of consequences of his or her action) and Section 185(B) of the motor vehicles act, which deals with the offence of driving under the influence of a drug to such an extent as to be incapable of exercising proper control over the vehicle.
The two have also been charged under IPC sections dealing with rash and negligent driving and criminal conspiracy.
A senior police officer said Kidderpore Road and Red Road often witness accidents as vehicles tend to speed through the thoroughfares.
“We have seen that there is a tendency among motorists to increase their speed on stretches with relatively thinner traffic. This makes such stretches prone to accidents,” said a senior officer at Lalbazar.
