The police said the tele-callers would first enquire if the people they were speaking to had a vacant plot of land or an open rooftop and pose as officials from cellphone network service providers.

If the person agreed, a link would be sent to him or her and he or she would be asked to fill in the details and provide documents related to the ownership of the land or the building.

“Once they managed to convince a person, they would ask him or her to pay fees like registration fee, a no-objection fee and a processing fee in the name of TRAI,” an officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said.

The victims of this call centre mostly hail from Assam and Odisha. “Most of the arrested women either hail from Assam or Odisha. They would talk to the victims in Assamese or Odiya to gain their trust,” he said.
