The last few days have been a great time for social media because of the new kid on the block — Threads. The new product from Meta and the team at Instagram have stolen the conversation from Twitter, at least for the time being. But there is some confusion… what do you call a post on Threads? It’s definitely not a tweet, even though the word is a part of everyday conversations.
The community of social media knitters has several suggestions — many are absurd but some make sense. To make sense of Threads, Meta has come up with the ‘Threads Dictionary’.
Threads, when used as a noun, it is as simple as “Threads is love.” What about if we want to speak about a ‘thread’? The example offered is: “@mosseri started a great thread.” Whatever you post on Threads is simply a post, like “Want to save this post?” If you want to publish a thread, it can be: “I posted a thread.” So you want to say that you have replied to a post/thread. The sentence could be: “Did you reply to me?” Or you want to repost (verb): “I reposted @zuck’s photo.” Finally, sharing your thoughts or someone’s post: “I quoted @mosseri.”
There has been a suggestion that follower count be turned into “thread count”. It makes sense but Threads is not agreeing to it. The best way to get used to all of this is by knitting and re-knitting. Oops, we mean, just go and start a thread.
