Right from the moment you step into Incheon Airport in Seoul, the message is everywhere: Samsung is having one of its biggest events — Galaxy Unpacked 2023, which is scheduled for July 26. The company has been working for several years to make foldable phones mainstream and has already delivered quite a few success stories through Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip phones.
On Wednesday, it looks like Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 will be unveiled, besides a few other devices, like smartwatches and tablets. Based on the company’s invitation, foldable phones will be the focus of the event.
If rumours are true, the Z Fold 5 will be the mini-computer we have been waiting for with enough software capabilities. Samsung has already incorporated features like a mini trackpad into the Z Fold series and this time, it will take apps many steps further. Of course, the focus will also be on the hinge of the Z Fold 5. One hopes there will be a less noticeable crease and a slimmer profile.
As for the Z Flip 5, it will all be about the cover screen and tech journalists are hoping to see a redesigned unit. If the screen is made bigger, it will become ideal for showcasing miniature versions of Android apps without having to open the screen, plus there will be more room for widgets.
Being the company’s last Unpacked event for 2023, we can expect big updates to Samsung’s Android- and Wear OS-based operating systems, including the launch of One UI 6 and One UI 5 Watch in the coming days.
You can watch the livestream of the Unpacked announcements on Samsung.com and on Samsung’s YouTube channel.
According to data from market tracker Counterpoint Research, the global foldable market increased 64 per cent in the first quarter of 2023 year-on-year in terms of sales volume.
