Parambrata Chattopadhyay and Ishaa Saha star in the new film Ghore Pherar Gaan, which is a musical that follows the journey of Tora, a girl from the suburbs of Calcutta, to her marital home in London. Tora is in dissonance with the high-flying lives of her NRI doctor husband Ribhu and her council-woman mother-in-law Shanta, and thus starts searching for solace outside the bounds of her home. This is when Imran, a consummate musician, enters her life, making her embrace life on her own terms.

After directing successful web shows across different OTT platforms, Aritra Sen moves to his first feature film as a director in Ghore Pherar Gaan, produced by Ashok Dhanuka and Himanshu Dhanuka. As a residing student in the UK, Aritra has very closely experienced the lives of Bengalis in London, and wanted to narrate their stories as he has seen it. His long-term creative collaborator Parambrata Chattopadhyay is the creative producer of the film. Parambrata also plays Imran, the central male lead paired with Ishaa Saha as Tora.

The original concept conceived by Aritra, was further developed and turned into a screenplay by a collaborative effort of Aritra Sen and Soumyasree Ghosh. Aritra and Soumyasree have worked in previous projects as writing partners in Nokol Heere and many others. “Ghore Pherar Gaan is a relationship story. It is a love story woven through music. It is a film in which the characters challenge the status quo instead of accepting it. Also because of my experience of living in the UK I am well versed with Bengalis living there. I wish to explore the mindspace of someone caught in an unknown city. How she grows through the film and accepts the city as home. Music serves as the means for the same and it resonates through her being. I am just waiting with bated breath for the shooting to start. I was supposed to direct my first film last year itself but due to the lockdown things got pushed. So the preparation has happened over the last six months and now the script is well brewed. Am excited to see how it translates into the screen. It’s one thing directing so many web shows and it’s completely different feeling to direct a film for the big screen. I sincerely thank Himanshu who has been a pillar of support,” said Aritra.

Shot by Tuban, the film will be edited by Sumit Chowdhury. The costume and styling will be done by Sabarni Das. Prabudhha Banerjee will be lending his soulful compositions to this musical, bringing an amalgamation of Rabindrasangeet and Bengali folk. It aims to create a fusion soundscape while simultaneously exploring the underground music scene of London. “Paramda plays the role of Imran, a struggling but supremely talented musician. Who better to cast in this role but him as he himself is such a talented musician. It makes the character so believable. Also Paramda is my long term creative collaborator and we have discussed this story at length and he has been an integral part of the scripting. For the role of Tora I wanted someone who could portray the role of a woman who is full of trepidation when she first comes to the UK. I needed an actor who can portray vulnerability as well as supreme self-confidence once her metamorphosis is over. Ishaa is a very good performer and has very expressive eyes. She also sings which makes it easier. I went with my gut on this. I feel this pairing is fresh and will resonate together,” says Aritra.
