Here’s how the ‘edit button’ on Twitter may function

The edit feature has been a long-standing demand and since Elon Musk reached a deal about the acquisition of the platform, the demand has simply increased

The Twitter edit button continues to be in the works and it’s taking a long time. But it seems that it will soon become a reality as Jane Manchun Wong, who keeps track of all the new features coming on the platform, has spotted something interesting.

Wong has found that users will need to hit a button called ‘Edit Tweet’ in the drop-down context menu, which will allow you to edit a tweet. If her findings are correct, the user will have a 30-minute window to edit after a tweet is published. On choosing the ‘Edit Tweet’ button, the original content will be shown to the user and then the necessary changes will be allowed. So, this goes beyond just typos.

“The current unreleased version of Edit Tweet reuploads media (images, videos, GIFs, etc) instead of reusing them. An inefficient use of the bandwidth and media processing power, might be lossy too. Plus, it turns my video into an image (mishandling media type),” Wong has tweeted.

This part is fine but what most people would like to know if the edited tweet will offer a glimpse of the original tweet. It seems there will be an ‘Edited’ button that will show up next to the timestamp, clicking which you can go through the ‘Edit History’ page, which should be able to showcase all the changes.

But it’s important to remember — as The Verge points out — that Wong has not published any completed, edited tweets to Twitter’s actual backend yet, meaning these findings are very tentative. The ‘Edit Tweet’ button has been a long-standing demand and since Elon Musk reached a deal about the acquisition of the platform, the demand has simply increased.
