Google Lens now has a special place — on the search engine’s homepage. The addition points to the importance of the image recognition technology in the coming days and years.

“The Google homepage doesn’t change often, but today it did…. Now you can ask visual questions easily from your desktop,” tweeted Rajan Patel, VP, engineering, Google.

Since it was announced at I/O 2017, the visual search tool appeared on Pixel phones and Google Photos before expanding on Android and then the Google app on iOS, as well as mobile Chrome. Last year, it appeared on the desktop web with Google Photos and later Chrome. In August, Google Images on the desktop web switched to Lens and also appeared in the results page Search field. Now it appears in the Search bar of the google.com homepage or a position of pride.

Clicking on the Lens button (a camera icon) prompts you to upload an image or paste a URL. Next, you are taken to a page that’s familiar if you’ve ever used the Lens app or any of its other integrations. Google Images allows you to look for similar-looking pictures (which has been there for quite some time) and with Lens, things move a few steps forward as Google also offers information about what’s in the picture. Scanning a picture will offer shopping results or uploading a picture of a plant or animal will make Google say what it is you are looking at.
