Women are in business — helming multinational corporations; women are in medicine — leading ground-breaking research; women are in technology — revolutionising the digital world; women are in journalism — proving that integrity runs deep; women are in education — shaping future generations; women are home-makers — transforming into entrepreneurs.

However, women continue to play a number of self-effacing roles that are often overlooked.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Google is celebrating the various roles women take on everyday through a diverse doodle.

This year’s doodle levels up the previous Women’s Day doodles with an animated slideshow. It begins with a still frame — an illustration that captures women of all ethnicities and cultures — and then moves into a slideshow that gives us a glimpse into the everyday lives of women across the world. There’s a working mother during the pandemic, a female doctor fighting the coronavirus, a woman as a nurturer of nature, a woman making handicrafts, a fashionista styling a show, a mechanic and a wildlife photographer.

“I want all women to receive all the respect they deserve. The last couple of years have been hard for everyone but for those women especially who have shifted focus, adjusted priorities and made sacrifices to be there for those who need them,” said Thoka Maer, Doodle Art’s director, who designed this year’s doodle.

“Each illustration depicted in today's doodle is connected by the common thread of how women show up for themselves, their families, and their communities," Maer said in an interview to Google.
