When in doubt, you can always go for black — unless, of course, you’re getting hitched! Black In Vogue’s Kanchankuntala Das is challenging the most widely accepted fashion code with her all-black bridal line-up. The designer who has stuck to all-black collections since her brand started in 2019, recently introduced a black bridal collection for brides who are looking to make a statement.
“I’ve never understood why we are steered away from black options when we have something to celebrate or when we’re marking something auspicious. I feel like it’s a stereotype and black can be celebratory. Indian brides are exploring so many shades for their weddings, be it green, pink, champagne or even brown but they’ll never pick black when it can be so flattering. I think it’s high time brides consider going for an all-black memo on their wedding day,” the NIFT alum shares.

Black In Vogue’s line of bridal wear boasts immaculate black lehengas made with natural fibres (like raw silk and opara silk), shimmery accents, daring necklines and resplendent gheras.
“I felt we’d never know if it works unless I actually make the clothes for brides. I feel people still need some time to acclimatise to the idea of actually wearing black on their wedding day. However, I see a lot of brides wearing my lehengas for pre-bridal soirees or engagements, which is also a great look. But I’m sure brides will be wearing black on their big day in the next 5-10 years, now that alternative bridal trends are in and black works for every body type,” Das shares, who also offers a ready-to-wear line-up at her store, featuring black cocktail saris and gowns.
