The fourth edition of the Hair and Beauty Show in Mumbai recently provided a platform that supported hair, beauty and nail creativity and education. Avant-garde styles are going mainstream and the bravehearts are blurring the lines between the two like never before, by wearing them with panache.
Products and tools are more eco- and user-friendly. They are also need-specific for the both the professional and the end consumer.Every skin, hair and nail type was represented in the beauty space and here are a few trend predictions for 2022-2023:
MAKE-UP
Satin and velveteen finish:
It’s all about the foundation. In this technique the coverage is skin-true and the satin-finish foundation is a look that’s both soft, velvety and slightly dewy, but with a matte effect. It’s about controlling the glow/highlighting and not letting that dominate the make-up. This works perfectly in the Indian context as it has more staying power than the totally dewy look.
Satin-finish method:
1. Clean and prep the skin
2. Use your favourite primer/serum for dry skin
3. Conceal
4. Use a buildable foundation, cream or stick, but start with the tiniest amount and build with a stippling brush
5. Use stippling brush for powder too
6. Set with finish spray
Hybrid make up:
Market buzz inspired by digital media has marked the entry of Hybrid make-up. This type of make up is skin-loving and has ingredients like collagen, hyaluronic acid, retinols to heal and build skin while it’s being made up.
Hair
Colour:
1. High-contrast colour
2. High-contrast balayage shades
3. Jet-black hair with ash white money pieces, and weaves balayaged into mids and ends
4. High-contrast colour panels
5. Bright blonde panelled pieces with dark copper/burgundy/red global colours
6. Alternating panels of dark and light
Cuts:
1. The C cut, or more technically put, face-framing layers that fall in a C shape around the face
2. The sliced bob: This is a sharp graphic bob that looks wig-like in its precision, is worn chin-length with no graduation or layers at all. It can be styled side or middle-parted
Hair Botox!
Unlike its skin namesake, Botox for the hair doesn’t require injections. It’s a conditioning agent that’s applied directly to your strands of hair.
The treatment application:
1. Clarifying shampoo to open your hair cuticles and prepare the hair for de-frizz and conditioning
2. The hair Botox is then applied to the strands
3. The treatment is left on wet hair for a period of time, usually between 20 minutes to an hour
4. Rinse out some product
5. Straight iron or blow-dry depending on desired outcome
Volume and curl trends:
According to Ace Stylist Savio John Periera of Mumbai, all textures of curls from type one to a coily four, are in, as is va-va-voom vintage-like volume. Trade companies are recognising this shift toward embracing natural textures and are creating special products to make for regimens that maximise their potential. Get out those diffuser nozzles and reach out for those curl creams and gels
Curly Girl method:
1. Wash with a cleanser that’s curly-hair specific
2. Leave on conditioner
3. On wet hair apply curl cream in praying-hands method, sliding down the lengths of hair
4. Begin the scrunch method
5. Apply gel, scrunch
6. Diffuse dry
7. Apply argan oil to palms, then spread, break gel cast by running fingers through hair
Trade companies are recognising this shift toward embracing natural textures and are creating special products to make for regimens that maximise their potential
Men: Fades & Beards
Fades and beards were everywhere. Mainstream low fades, trendy temple fades and high fades with hair designs/pencil shading drawn into them! So, bring on the gels and the pomades. This trend is here for the long haul as they suit all kinds of face shapes and hair types and are creativity centric. These require regular trips to the salon so be prepared for high-maintenance.

Heard of gut microbiome? Well let’s move on to the next important microbiome story. The one that lives on our skin flora, produces vitamins and hormones that can affect our mood and health! Interfering with this ecosystem can give rise to everything from how you feel to giving you dermatitis.
Protecting it requires:
1. Avoidance of harsh cleansers
2. A healthy diet
3. Following a skin regimen that has pre-post application products that are skin flora-friendly and nurturing
