Film-makers, architects, scientists,musicians... most of them have a MacBookPro with them all the time. And what Apple has done is unveil extremely fast options in the form of the new 14- and 16-inch MacBookPro featuring M2 Pro and M2 Max, which are the company’s own pro silicon offering a good balance of power and battery life.
In what ways are they different? You can choose either chip for each machine. The chips offer up to a 12-core CPU, with the M2 Pro going up to a 19-core GPU and the potential of up to 32GB of unified memory. In case you go with the M2 Max, you can upgrade to a 38-core GPU and up to 96-GB of unified memory.
Apple says the M2 Pro has double the amount of transistors the M2 came with and nearly 20per cent more than the M1 Pro. It also features 200GB/s of unified memory bandwidth, twice of what’s available on the regular M2. Needless to say, all your Photoshop and Premiere Pro tasks can be completed in no time. The company says the MacBook Pro with M2 Pro “is able to processimages in Adobe Photoshop up to 40 per cent faster than with M1 Pro, and as much as 80 percent faster than MacBook Pro with an Intel Corei9 processor”.
The M2 Max chip goes big on GPU power. Apple says: “With up to 96GB of unified memory in the M2 Max model, creators can work on scenes so large that PC laptops can’t even run them.”
On the battery front there are interesting updates. The 16-inch MacBook Pro has been bumped to 22 hours of battery life and it’s “the longest battery life ever in a Mac”. It’s good to see Apple updating its silicon chips at regular intervals and this will make people curious about what high-end chips can deliver.
Pricing and availability
Available for order, the machines will begin arriving to customers starting January 24. The new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro starts at Rs 199,900 (Rs 184,900 for education) and the16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro starts at Rs249,900 (Rs 229,900 for education)
