It’s that time of the year again, when Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants unveils its latest rankings. On Tuesday night (March 26) the results were announced in Seoul. The best restaurant in Asia, according to the list, is Sezanne, located at Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo in Marunouchi. The restaurant stepped up from its #2 rank last year. The second spot belonged to Florilège in Tokyo, known for its regionally-inspired French cuisine, while the third rank was bagged by Gaggan Anand in Bangkok, led by Kolkata boy Gaggan. City-wise, Singapore and Bangkok bagged the maximum number of wins.
Three restaurants from India have made their mark in the Top 50.
At #23 is Masque, an ingredient-led modern Indian restaurant in Mumbai. This marks its third consecutive year as India’s top-ranked restaurant. Housed in a former Mumbai textile mill, the restaurant established in 2016, is led by restaurateur Aditi Dugar and chef Varun Totlani. “Our mission is to celebrate India’s rich culture, ingredients, tradition and cuisine, and that’s the magic of Masque” Totlani had told My Kolkata in an older interview.
At #26 is Indian Accent in New Delhi’s The Lodhi hotel, also a modern Indian restaurant, with a recent outpost in Mumbai. Owned by Rohit Khattar, and spearheaded by chef Manish Mehrotra, its inventive approach to Indian cuisine had earned it a place on the list for the 10th time. In 2022, Kolkata got a taste of its offerings during a pop-up event in 2022 at JW Marriott.
At #44 is Avartana at the ITC Grand Chola. This marks Avartana’s second appearance on the list, consolidating its rank for the second time in a row. Among the Top 3 Indian restaurants on the list, only Avartana has an outpost in Kolkata, at the ITC Royal Bengal. So you can hop in and try the fare, first-hand!
