The Bengal Obstetric and Gynaecological Society (BOGS), along with partners Swayam and Afflatus Foundation among other notable non-government organisations working in this field, will hold a public awareness programme on gender-based violence (GBV) at Town Hall from 11am to 2pm on Sunday. It will be a part of their 16-day awareness drive.
BOGS is an 88-year-old organisation comprising of 1200-plus doctors actively involved in women’s healthcare.
Sunday’s programme will include two-panel discussions on GBV, focusing on its impact and strategies to address it. Another highlight will be the ‘Facilitation of Violence Survivors’, where grassroots change-makers who have faced significant societal challenges. and have emerged as strong leaders and champions will share their stories. This programme will address GBV in the health sector too. The Bengal Society participation will be led by its president, Dr Basab Mukherjee and secretary Dr Amit Basu.
The International Awareness Drive to End Violence against Women and Girls is part of a global campaign originating from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute sponsored by the Centre for Women’s Global Leadership in 1991. The dates November 25, International Day Protesting Violence against Women and December 10, International Human Rights Day, were chosen to emphasise that violence against women is a violation of human rights.
