Three girls came in contact with a high-tension live wire, killing a teenager on the spot and inflicting severe burn injuries on the other two in Chatra.
The victim has been identified as Kanti Kumari (16). The other two girls, have been sent to Hazaribagh Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
The incident took place in Laranga village of Tandwa block, around 47kms from the Chatra district headquarters.
Police said Kanti and her three friends; Jaso Kumari, Basanti Kumari, Asha Kumari and Kanti Kumari were in the forest in search of mushrooms.
They failed to notice an overhead high-tension wire of 33000v that broke and fell down on the ground close to them.
Kanti died on the spot whereas Jaso and Basati suffered shock, fell and sustained burn injuries after coming in contact with the wire.
Asha, who was following them, rushed back to the village and informed their parents.
Villagers reached the spot and brought the dead body and sent duo injured ones to Chatra Sadar Hospital.
The high-tension wire stretched from Patratu of Ramgarh and came to Tandwa via Piparwar.
The villagers said the wire had cracked and fell on the ground claiming the teenager’s life.
Talking to The Telegraph Online, Tandwa sub divisional police officer, Ashutosh Satyam confirmed the death and two injuries.
Simaria MLA Kishun Kumar Das met Kanti’s grief-stricken family and assured compensation. He also assured the family of the other two also for all help.
Online classes for DAV Schools
The director of Jharkhand Zone 1 of DAV Group of Schools on Friday indicated a shift of focus towards online education. K.C. Srivastava said teachers would be asked to attend schools on alternate days while following social distancing norms to conduct online presentation of classes.
He appealed to parents and guardians to provide laptops and tablets to their wards in order to ensure the success of online classes amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Bribery cuffs
Two staffers at the Chainpur police station in Palamau were caught accepting bribe on Friday.
Bijendra Kumar Roy, 48, from Bhojpur in Bihar and Nandan Manjhi, 45, from Chainpur had allegedly demanded Rs 2,000 from one Munna Kumar, 22, a resident of Kankari under Chainpur police station, to release his bike which was seized by the police during checks.
A team from the anti-corruption bureau (ACB), Palamau, arrested them from the police station around 11.30am while they were accepting the money from Kumar.
Deputy superintendent of police, ACB, Ram Pujan Singh, who led the team, said: “We had laid a trap to catch the duo after Kumar approached us. Police on Thursday seized the bike of Kumar. Rs 2000 was illegally sought.”
“We smeared a bundle of notes with a chemical and gave it to Kumar to hand over to one of the employees. As soon as the complainant gave the notes, our team nabbed him,” Singh added.
They made the accused put the right palm in a glass of water, which turned red because of the chemical.
Both the accused have been taken to the ACB headquarters in Daltonganj. They will be produced before the ACB court.
Bodies found
Two bodies were found at different spots in Giridih district on Friday.
One of the bodies seemed to be a case of suicide, while in the other case police investigation is on to ascertain whether it is a murder.
The first case is from Alampur under Gava police station area where the body of a 16-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree in a deserted area near Murli hill, 5km from her village.
She was a student of a government school in Gava. The reason for her suicide is unknown. The police investigation is on.
The girl left her home on Friday morning and after some time, her dead body was found hanging from a tree.
A large crowd of villagers gathered at the spot.
Ayush Kumar Gupta was found dead under suspicious circumstances in his house. The police is working to find out whether he was murdered. The deceased’s father, Pawan Gupta, works at Giridih district council.
According to police sources, Ayush had eloped with a woman a few months ago, but returned later. His relative said Ayush was upset for two days.
Jumbo menace
A herd of elephants damaged several houses in Harsali village under the Kasmar block in Bokaro in the wee hours of Friday.
The villagers were scared as elephants entered the village. Later, the elephants crossed the fields and went into the forest.
The villagers informed the forest department on Friday morning.
Forest department employees inquired about the damage done by the elephants and assured compensation.
Covid scare at police station
A migrant labourer who had been evading arrest was finally nabbed by Barhi police on Wednesday. However, he tested positive for the coronavirus soon after, prompting the health department to sanitise the police station.
Everyone at the police station was sent to 14 days’ quarantine. The samples of the policemen have been collected and sent for testing.
