The boy rushed out to find his father in a puddle of blood and saw a bike at a distance with one person on it. Since Singh was still breathing, family members took him to hospital but he died on the way.
“I suspect the cousin of my maternal uncle and his seven sons, who have criminal antecedents, are behind the death of my father. They had a dispute over a plot of land and had threatened my father with dire consequences. Some people even overheard them hatching a conspiracy,” Suraj told reporters.
Sources in the family said Singh left home in his SUV on business on Monday morning, but returned around 6pm. An hour later, he took his bike to the nearby market to have some tea. He was targeted when he was returning home.
Natives of Gola in Ramgarh, the Singh family had relocated to Jaridih 15 years ago. Singh had first launched a roadside eatery before making forays into the real estate business.
SP Karthik said business rivalry or personal feud could be the reason behind the murder. “Interrogation of the suspects will help us make headway in the case,” he added.
A 42-year-old real estate broker was shot at and fatally injured right in front of his house in Jaridih, 18km from Bokaro steel city and 55km from here, late on Monday night.
Land dispute is believed to be the trigger behind the murder of Raghu Singh. Police who suspect the role of close relatives have detained two suspects.
Bokaro SP Karhik S. said the shooting in Tetariyatand under Jaridih thana took place around 10.50pm. Singh who took a single bullet in the stomach was rushed to Bokaro General Hospital, 18km away, by family members, but declared brought dead. “Two persons are being questioned. Forensic experts have been pressed into service,” the SP said.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday morning, Singh’s 18-year-old son Suraj said he heard a gunshot and saw a man speeding away on a bike, but he was too far to notice any identifiable details.
“I heard my father’s bike screech to a halt outside the main gate and boundary wall. When he didn’t enter the house even five minutes later, I peeped out of the window but couldn’t see him. I had barely reached the gate when I heard a loud bang,” Suraj recalled.
