Chief minister Hemant Soren is understood to have received two threat mails, prompting state police to constitute a special team to investigate their origins, Jharkhand police said on Friday.

Police spokesperson IGP Suman Gupta told reporters, “Two threat mails have been sent to the CM and police have launched an investigation to crack the case on a priority basis after lodging FIRs at cyber police station in Ranchi.”

Gupta refused to share any further details like the time when the mails were sent, or when these were first seen and whether the chief minister or a member of his staff saw them first.

However, according to police sources, the two mails were sent from different IP addresses. Also, separate FIRs had been lodged at cyber police station in Ranchi to start investigations.

Jharkhand’s CID rolled out a separate probe to track the source of themails and the sender/senders. A source in the cyber police station in Ranchi claimed that the mails threatened harm to the chief minister. “The senders only said sudhar jao warna jaan se maar denge (mend your ways or you will be killed),” he said.

Hemant, who returned to work from his office on Thursday after eight days of home quarantine, had not issued a statement on the mails at the time of filing this report.

On Friday, the chief minister went about his business as per schedule, chairing the state sentence review board in the afternoon. Later, he was scheduled to chair another meeting to take stock of the upcoming sports policy which is being framed.
