One person was killed and at least eight others injured when a portion of the canopy at the old departure forecourt of the Delhi Airport’s terminal 1 collapsed this morning.
The incident happened around 5 am when a portion of the canopy and supporting pillars collapsed in a pile on the cars parked underneath. Several people are believed to be trapped underneath.
“Due to heavy rain since early this morning a portion of the canopy at the old departure forecourt of Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1 collapsed this morning. Emergency personnel are working to provide all necessary assistance and medica aid to those affected,” said a spokesperson for the Delhi International Airport Limited.
Soon after the accident, all departures from Terminal 1 have been temporarily suspended, and all check-in counters closed as a safety measure.
Traffic going towards the T1 departure of the Indira Gandhi International Airport has been diverted to the CISF check post towards the Arrival gate of T1.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, Safdarjung and Palam had received 153.77 mm and 93 mm rainfall respectively between 8.30 pm last night and 5,30 am this morning.
In a three-hour span between 2.30 am and 5.30 am, Safdarjung had recorded 148.5 mm rainfall.
In a statement IndiGo Airlines said flight operations have been impacted due to structural damage to Terminal 1, Delhi airport because of adverse weather conditions.
“As passengers are not able to enter the terminal, this has led to flight cancellations. Passengers already inside the terminal will be able to board their planned flights, but those with flights later in the day will be offered alternatives,” the statement read.
IndiGo passengers have been offered the helplines 0124 6173838 or 0124 4973838 to seek assistance regarding their travel plans.
“This unplanned situation has also led to operations across the network being impacted. Customers are advised to keep a track of and confirm their flight status before leaving for the airport,” the statement read.
