The CBI on Monday filed a chargesheet before a Delhi trial court against Lalu Prasad in the land-for-jobs case, naming his son and Bihar deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav as a co-accused.

Lalu Prasad has been at the forefront of efforts to unite the Opposition before next year’s Lok Sabha elections and played an important role in organising the meeting of Opposition parties in Patna on June 23, at which they decided to together take on the BJP.

The chargesheet — the second in the case — also names Lalu Prasad’s wife Rabri Devi and 14 others. Tejashwi is named as an accused for the first time.

The CBI had registered the case on May 18, 2022, alleging that during his tenure as railway minister between 2004 and 2009, Lalu Prasad had helped at least 100 people from Bihar to illegally secure Group D jobs in various railway zones in lieu of money and land.

Opposition leaders, including Tejashwi, had in March written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the alleged misuse of central investigation agencies against the BJP’s rivals.
