Calling the May 16 blast at the illegal firecracker factory in East Midnapore’s Egra which killed 12 people, an “eye-opener”, Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee warned officers in charge of local police stations of strict disciplinary action if quick action is not taken against such illegal units across the state once tip-offs are received.

“I am not here to do politics. I am here to extend the hand of humanity, to help the next of kin of those who perished in the terrible accident, to help the suffering family members left behind by those who passed away,” the chief minister announced from a prescheduled government programme in Egra on Saturday morning which she attended after skipping the Niti Ayog meet in Delhi.

A total of eight chief ministers have abstained from the NITI Aayog's eighth Governing Council meeting on Saturday, which will deliberate on several issues including, health, skill development, women empowerment and infrastructure development.

The BJP lashed out at chief ministers who boycotted the governing council meeting of the NITI Aayog, calling their decision "anti-people" and "irresponsible".

Within a week of assuming power, the Congress government in Karnataka has expanded its cabinet on Saturday, filling all posts.

Among those who got ministerial posts include sons of two former chief ministers -- R Gundu Rao’s son Dinesh Gundu Rao and S Bangarappa’s son Madhu Bangarappa.

The party also gave a chance to several former ministers and veteran Congress leaders in its second list.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Saturday demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi to immediately withdraw the ordinance issued by the Centre on control of services in Delhi, as his counterparts from Delhi and Punjab, Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann, met him over the issue here.

Rao made the demand during a joint press conference with his Kejriwal and Mann.

Modi government has insulted the people of the Delhi by bringing in the ordinance. "I can say without an iota of doubt it is insult to the Delhi state people," KCR, as Rao is addressed, said.

The army cordon moved in slowly as darkness set in over the village of New Keithelmanbi some 40 km from the capital Imphal, surrounded on all sides by a dense forest.

"In the last few days, we have observed that communities are attacking each other with firearms. In some cases, people are being killed … This sudden emergence of arms is delaying the entire peace process," a senior Army official told PTI.

The Congress on Saturday paid rich tributes to former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his death anniversary with party chief Mallikarjun Kharge saying 21st century India cannot be imagined without the contribution of India's first PM.

"India of the 21st century cannot be imagined without the contribution of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru," Kharge said in a tweet in Hindi.

Several party leaders paid tributes on social media to the Congress stalwart.

A passenger on an Asiana Airlines flight told police he opened a door on the plane minutes before it landed in Daegu, South Korea, on Friday because he was "uncomfortable", Yonhap News Agency reported.

The man, in his thirties, told police that he opened the door because he "wanted to get off the plane quickly", Yonhap said, citing the Daegu Dongbu Police Station. He also told police he was stressed after losing his job recently.

A young woman and a man from different religions were allegedly manhandled and heckled by a mob when they come out of a hotel in Indore in Madhya Pradesh and two persons who came to the couple's rescue received stab wounds, a police official said on Friday.

"The woman told them she had come to have dinner with the man after informing her parents. She also objected to their misbehaviour. Meanwhile, two persons who came to the couple's rescue were injured after they were stabbed with a knife by someone from the crowd," the Additional DCP said.

Calcutta police said it had registered an FIR against the producer and director of the film ‘Diary of West Bengal’ alleging that the movie’s trailer had promoted enmity between different groups.

The FIR has been lodged with Amherst Police Station and a legal notice was sent to director Sanoj Mishra asking him to appear before the Investigating Officer (IO) of the case on May 30, a senior police officer said.

Rain and gusty winds lashed Delhi and the National Capital Region on Saturday morning lowering temperature to 19.3 degrees Celsius, seven notches below the season's average, the weather department said.

Uprooted trees and waterlogging led to traffic snarls in several parts of the city, including at the Vasant Vihar-Delhi airport road stretch, the Kanshiram Takkar Marg and the Mahipalpur highway underpass.
