Taking exception to an interview given to a Bengali news channel by Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, a sitting judge of the Calcutta High Court who is hearing a chunk of cases in the state’s cash-for-jobs scam, the Supreme Court observed that the judge would have to recuse himself from hearing cases against Trinamul Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee if it turns out that he spoke against Banerjee in the said interview.

The Apex court on Monday sought a report in the form of an affidavit within Friday from the Registrar General of the Calcutta High Court on whether Justice Gangopadhyay was interviewed on the pending case related to the recruitment scam in Bengal. The report, the Bench directed, would have to be submitted to the Supreme Court Registrar Judicial after verifying from the judge and should include a clarification.

The protesting wrestlers on Monday threatened to approach the top court of the country if an FIR is not lodged against WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and also sought to mobilise nationwide support by appealing to 'khaps', 'panchayats' and several other organisations to back their cause.

On a day when the sports ministry stalled the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) election on May 7 and asked the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to form an ad-hoc committee to run day-to-day affairs of the federation, the protesting wrestlers said they have nothing to do with the polls and would continue to press for a proper investigation into the allegations that Singh sexually harassed women athletes.

India on Monday launched 'Operation Kaveri' to evacuate its nationals from violence-hit Sudan. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said India's ships and aircraft are set to bring the Indians back home. "Operation Kaveri gets underway to bring back our citizens stranded in Sudan. About 500 Indians have reached Port Sudan. More on their way," Jaishankar tweeted.

France has evacuated some Indians along with citizens of 27 other countries as part of its evacuation mission from violence-hit Sudan. Sudan's sudden slide into conflict between the army and a paramilitary group called Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has stranded thousands of foreigners, including diplomats and aid workers, and countries are working to evacuate their nationals.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar met West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee in Calcutta on Monday as they sought to cobble up a coalition of opposition parties, with the two regional satraps stressing on the need to "prepare together" for the next Lok Sabha polls in 2024.

The meeting between the two leaders, which was also attended by Bihar's deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav, was described as "positive".

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) on Monday started the first debt buyback programme since billionaire Gautam Adani's conglomerate was targeted by a US short-seller in January.

APSEZ floated a tender to buy back as much as $130 million of its July 2024 bonds and similar amounts in each of the next four quarters, it said in an exchange filing, as it looks to regain investor confidence by showing that its liquidity position is comfortable.

YSR Telangana Party president Y S Sharmila was on Monday detained by police here following an altercation with them outside her residence here during which allegedly "assaulted" cops.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Zone) Joel Davis, they saw some TV visuals in which Sharmila was seen assaulting police officials who tried to prevent her from proceeding with a protest for which she had not obtained permission.

The Supreme Court on Monday closed contempt proceedings against ex-IPL commissioner Lalit Modi after he tendered an unconditional apology for his remarks against the judiciary in social media posts.

A bench of Justices MR Shah and CT Ravikumar took note of an affidavit filed by Modi in which he stated that in future he will not do anything which is inconsistent with the "majesty or dignity of Courts or Indian judiciary" in any manner.

Heat wave conditions are unlikely to return to most parts of India until the month end and a fresh rain spell is expected in the northwest region from Friday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.

While the maximum temperatures in northwest, central and east India oscillated between 36 and 39 degrees Celsius on Sunday, it hovered between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius in the rest of the country, barring the western Himalayan region where it settled between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius, the MeT said.

The Madhya Pradesh forest department has asked the Centre for an "alternate" site for cheetahs currently introduced at the Kuno National Park, which has seen the death of two felines in less than a month, with officials citing lack of logistical support and space.

A senior state forest official on condition of anonymity said they do not have enough logistical support for the upkeep for the cheetahs, brought in two batches of 8 and 12 felines from Namibia and South Africa respectively since September last year.

A gate named after Sachin Tendulkar was on Monday unveiled at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground here to mark the 50th birthday of the Indian batting legend.

Tendulkar, who turns 50 on Monday, made three centuries and 785 runs with a highest score of 241 not out (in 2004) in five Tests at the SCG and averaged 157 at what he described as his favourite cricket ground outside of India.
