Actress-comedian Whoopi Goldberg sang the song Oh Happy Day with the cast of Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1993 comedy film on the sets of chat show The View on Wednesday.
Goldberg’s co-star Kathy Najimy and many of the young actors who formed the movie's choir joined the celebration, shows a video shared by The View on X.
Together, they recreated the iconic scene where Goldberg’s character, Sister Mary Clarence, leads them in a heartfelt performance of Oh Happy Day.
“'OH HAPPY DAY': Whoopi Goldberg reunites members of the 'Sister Act 2' cast to perform 'Oh Happy Day' from the 1993 hit movie to kick off our 30th anniversary reunion special,” the official handle of the show wrote on X alongside the two-and-a-half-minute long video.
Ryan Toby, who portrayed the young Ahmal, reprised his lead vocal role in the performance alongside Goldberg.
The cast also performed the song Joyful, Joyful from the film, with Tanya Trotter of The War and Treaty stepping in for Lauryn Hill, who originally played Rita Louise Watson but did not attend the reunion. Goldberg was visibly moved, shedding tears after the performance.
In addition to Toby and Najimy, the reunion featured Wendy Makkena, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Monica Calhoun, Alex Martin, David Kater, Frank Odell Howard, Dionna Nichelle, Jermaine Montell, Tanya Trotter, DeeDee Magno Hall, Ashley Thompson and Deondray Gossfield.
During the reunion, Goldberg said that the appeal of the Sister Act films lies in their relatable characters. “Worldwide, it doesn’t matter how old you are, you are the age of those kids when you see the movie. You’re the age of them and you remember your time… I think people just feel themselves here,” she said.
This reunion on The View was not the first for the Sister Act cast. In 2017, Goldberg, Najimy, and Makkena reunited with co-stars Sherri Izzard, Darlene Koldenhoven, Beth Fowler, Andrea Robinson, and Prudence Holmes to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the original film.
