Warner Bros Pictures is preparing for a busy 2023 with a large number of theatrical releases, higher than any other studio this year. Most months this year will have a release from the Hollywood studio, with some months seeing more than one biggie blazing in.
DC BONANZA
There will be as many as four DC titles blazing into cinemas in India this year. These include Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the sequel to the 2019 box-office winner Shazam! starring Zachary Levi, on March 17; The Flash, with Ezra Miller as Barry Allen aka The Flash, arriving on June16. Blue Beetle, with Cobra Kai’s Xolo Maridueña playing the eponymous superhero in what is DC’s first adaptation of a comic led by a Latino superhero, has an August 18 date in cinemas. Rounding off the DC-rich year will be Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom on December 21, with Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry / Aquaman, the half Atlantean/ half-human king of Atlantis who can swim at supersonic speeds and communicate with aquatic life.
FRANCHISE BIGGIES
Also on the anvil are a couple of sequels. Creed III, the sequelto 2018’s Creed II and the ninthfilm in the Rocky franchise,with Michael B. Jordan returning as Adonis “Donnie”Creed, will release on March3, while Evil Dead Rise, the fifth film in the iconic horror franchise, releases on April 21. The Nun 2, the latest entry in The Conjuring universe, will return to spook on September 8. November 3 is reserved for Dune: Part Two, the second part of the Denis Villeneuve directed epic science-fiction film, with its expansive ensemble cast led by Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya. Meg 2: The Trench, serving as a sequel to the 2018 film The Meg and starring Jason Statham, will release on August 4.
On October 14, from the creative team behind the new Halloween trilogy, comes a terrifying new chapter in The Exorcist franchise. DreamWorks Animation’s third instalment in its blockbuster animated musical franchise arrives with Trolls Band Together on November 17.
EPIC TITLES
Barbie, Greta Gerwig’s live-action take on the much-loved fashion doll starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, will release on July 21. Christopher Nolan fans are in for a treat with Oppenheimer,the new IMAX-shot epic thriller starring Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr. and Matt Damon, that is also eyeing a July 21 release date. On December 29, Illumination takes flight with a funny, feathered family vacation in the action-comedy Migration. Wonka, a new origin tale starring Timothee Chalamet, will release on December 15.
COOL OUTINGS
M. Night Shyamalan’s latest mind-twister arrives on February 3 in the form of Knock at the Cabin, an apocalyptic psychological horror thriller that stars Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff and Rupert Grint. A film that we are really looking forward to is Cocaine Bear, a wild dark comedy inspired by the true story of a drug runner’s plane crash, missing cocaine, and the black bear that ate it, arriving on February 23. On April 7, from Nintendo and Illumination comes The Super Mario Bros Movie, a new animated action-comedy based on the world of the globally beloved game. The dark comedy Renfield, a modern monster tale of Dracula’s long-suffering assistant that stars Oscar winner Nicolas Cage as The Prince of Darkness, has a release date of April 14. And then, of course, is Vin Diesel vrooming in with Fast X on May 19. Spoilt for choice? For sure!
