Vijay and Trisha’s 2004 blockbuster Ghilli trumps Lal Salaam upon re-release, earns Rs 8 crore globally

The sports action drama helmed by Dharani re-released in select theatres on April 20 to mark its 20th anniversary

Re-released Tamil blockbuster Ghilli starring Thalapathy Vijay and Trisha Krishnan has trumped Rajinikanth’s Lal Salaam at the box office, collecting Rs 4.75 crore nett on its opening day against the latter’s Rs 3.55 crore nett in India, as per figures with industry data-tracking platform Sacnilk.

Ghilli, a 2004 sports-action drama helmed by Dharani, raked in a staggering Rs 8 crore globally on April 20, the day it was re-released in theatres.

Sacnilk's report also mentions that Ghilli saw approximately 1,50,000 tickets sold on BookMyShow alone, adding that total ticket sales for the film exceeded 4,00,000 on its opening day.

Directed by Rajnikanth's daughter Aishwarya, Lal Salaam had hit theatres on February 9.

Trisha expressed her excitement about the romantic action comedy's re-release on her Instagram page. Sharing several photos from the sports drama, she wrote, “If this is not coming full circle I don’t know what is♥️ Woke up to FDFS BLOCKBUSTER vibes AGAIN 2004️2024.”

Apart from Vijay and Trisha, Ghilli also features an ensemble cast including Prakash Raj, Ashish Vidyarthi, Janaki Sabesh, Dhamu and Tanikella Bharani. A remake of the 2003 Telugu film Okkadu, Ghilli revolves around a Kabaddi player Saravanavelu (Vijay) who travels to Madurai for a tournament but finds himself entangled in a situation where he must save a woman named Dhanalakshmi (Trisha) from the clutches of a dangerous gang leader (played by Prakash Raj) infatuated with her.
